Trump and Modi Agree to Trade Talks as India Offers Tariff Reductions and Energy Deals

U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have agreed to initiate trade talks aimed at resolving long-standing tariff disputes. During their meeting at the White House, Modi proposed reducing India’s tariffs on U.S. imports, increasing purchases of American oil, gas, and defense equipment, and exploring potential concessions to ease trade tensions.

Trump, who has repeatedly criticized India’s “very high” tariffs, welcomed the proposal, stating that the two nations would work toward a reciprocal trade relationship. “We are being reciprocal with India. Whatever India charges, we charge them,” Trump said during a joint press conference.

The discussions also touched on India’s plans to double trade with the U.S. by 2030 and deepen cooperation in defense, including the potential sale of F-35 stealth fighters. However, Indian officials clarified that the F-35 deal remains a proposal with no formal process underway.

The talks come amid a $45.6 billion U.S. trade deficit with India and ongoing concerns over unauthorized immigration. Both leaders emphasized their commitment to national interests, with Modi stating, “Like [Trump], I also keep the national interest of India at the top of everything else.
