Trump Tariff Fears Force Nissan to Block New US Sales of Mexican-Plant Infiniti Models

Nissan Motor Co. has suspended new U.S. orders for Mexican-built Infiniti SUVs, citing “evolving trade policy conditions” as  President Trump proposes aggressive new tariffs on vehicles imported from Mexico. The affected models include:

  • Infiniti QX50 (Aguascalientes plant)
  • Infiniti QX60 (manufactured in Smyrna, TN but uses 40% Mexican parts)

Key Developments:

  • Decision impacts 2025 model year inventory
  • Existing orders will be fulfilled
  • No timeline given for order resumption

Trade Policy Context:
Trump has proposed:

  • 35% baseline tariff on Mexican auto imports
  • Additional 10% “border tax” on foreign-built vehicles
  • Possible 100% tariffs on certain manufacturers

“Nissan is wisely hitting pause before committing to inventory that may become economically unviable,” said AutoPacific analyst Ed Kim.
